Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
