Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
