Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
