Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
