Be clever, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
