Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
