Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
