Be smart, play smart, and learn how to play craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
