Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
