Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
