Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
