Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
