Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
