Be smart, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
