Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
