Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
