Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
