Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
