Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
