Be cunning, play smart, and learn how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
