Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
