Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
