Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
