Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
