Be cunning, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
